Men for krystallinsk silica er den respirable st\u00f8vfraktion vigtigst pga. dens potentielt sundhedsskadelig virkning for mennesker. Partikelst\u00f8rrelsen kan variere betydeligt alt efter hvilket materiale, du arbejder med. R\u00e5materialer i form af fine pulvere kan allerede indeholde partikler, som er i den respirable st\u00f8rrelse. Vand hj\u00e6lper med at h\u00e6mme st\u00f8v, s\u00e5 materialer med et h\u00f8jere vandindhold vil ofte afgive mindre st\u00f8v, n\u00e5r de h\u00e5ndteres og anvendes.
