Introduction to Crystalline Silica and Good Practices

Why are we talking about dust?

Many types of dust make us sneeze, which can be annoying, but they are not normally harmful, especially at low levels.

However there are some types of dust which if inhaled in high concentrations on a regular basis for a long time can cause persistent irritation and permanent damage to the lungs. One of these types of dust – Respirable Crystalline Silica (also known as RCS) – is created when materials containing crystalline silica are cut, crushed, ground and used in other high energy processes in your workplace.

That’s why it’s important that you understand RCS and the risks it poses, and know how to limit your exposure whilst working!
